A rematch or re-boxing (Japanese: 再戦 rematch) is a second or subsequent battle confronting a Trainer or Pokémon.

In the core series games, it is mandatory for the thespian to defeat certain Trainers to advance inside the game. Technically, if the histrion is defeated, they are given the take a chance to battle this opponent over again until defeated (barring exceptional circumstances), but this isn't considered a rematch.

Well-nigh of the fourth dimension, however, if a Trainer is defeated, that Trainer will not exist available for a rematch until certain atmospheric condition have been met. When Trainers usually agree to rematch, their Pokémon will have become stronger (level up or evolution), or they would already have acquired more Pokémon (sometimes from another region, once the player has obtained the National Pokédex).

Types of rematch

Regular Trainers

From Generation 2 onwards, with the exception of Pokémon Black and White and 10 and Y, some regular Trainers found along normal routes and caves tin be challenged for a rematch.

In Pokémon Gold, Argent, and Crystal and Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, the player can exchange Pokégear phone numbers with specific Trainers, assuasive them to contact the role player for a rematch. Note that Trainers accept to exist rebattled as soon as possible, otherwise the adventure to do so will disappear.

In Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, the number of difficulty levels and triggers are defined individually for each Trainer. Certain rematches are bachelor only in Aureate and Silvery, while others are just in Crystal. The following events are triggers for new rematches:

  • Reaching a new city/boondocks in Johto, starting with Goldenrod City
  • Reaching the Lake of Rage
  • Defeating Team Rocket at Mahogany Boondocks or Goldenrod City
  • Becoming Champion
  • Returning the Automobile Part to the Kanto Power Establish

Additionally, in Gold and Silvery, the player will battle the strongest team available, but in Crystal, each squad has to be battled in gild (including fighting the initial team over again).

In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, the Trainers' teams have 3 dissimilar difficulty levels: the first level is used in the first rematch, the 2nd after the histrion has get-go entered the Hall of Fame, and the third after the role player has obtained all xvi Badges.

In Pokémon Ruddy, Sapphire, and Emerald, the PokéNav's Trainer'south Eyes or Match Phone call has similar functions to the Pokégear, keeping rail of Trainers who eventually want to re-battle the thespian. Regular Trainers are eligible for rematches after obtaining the Residue Badge; one time it is obtained, if the player is on a map with eligible Trainers, each Trainer on the map has a separate 31% chance to need a rematch every 255 steps.[1]

In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, the Trainer's Heart function returns, and Trainers are ready for a rematch more frequently than in Generation 3; in these games, the Trainers' teams improve equally the histrion progresses through the game, and are at their strongest after the player has entered the Hall of Fame.

Red uses the Vs. Seeker on Route 25. Three Trainers wish to have a rematch.

In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, and Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, while outdoors, the player can apply the Vs. Seeker to randomly brand nearby Trainers ready for a rematch. Certain Trainers have stronger teams, depending on how far the player is through the game, every bit long as they accept defeated that Trainer's previous party. New Vs. Seeker parties are unlocked at the following events:

  • Obtaining the Vs. Seeker
  • Arriving in Celadon City FR LG /defeating Fantina D P /defeating Crasher Wake Pt
  • Arriving in Fuchsia City FR LG /capturing or defeating the embrace Legendary Pokémon D P Pt
  • Inbound the Hall of Fame

In Pokémon Black and White and Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, Trainers in the Big Stadium and Small Court of Nimbasa City and the Purple Unova can be rematched daily. In Pokémon Black two and White two, as the thespian progresses through the game, the Trainers' Pokémon are battled at higher levels, and will be at their strongest after the player has entered the Hall of Fame. Some Trainers may supplant their Pokémon. Pokémon Breeders in Black 2 and White 2 will re-claiming the histrion upon sight (as long equally the player has left the area since their last battle), fifty-fifty if the player had previously defeated them; however, their teams remain the same during each battle.

In Pokémon Ten and Y, Trainers in the Battle Chateau tin be battled each time that Trainer has entered the Battle Chateau. Just those whose rank is the same as or lower than the player's will announced. The player can purchase writs to take an outcome on three different factors (political party levels, prize coin, and Trainer arrival charge per unit) for the remainder of that day, although issued writs can exist swapped out if the new one has the aforementioned type of event.

Rival

Since Generation I, the player'south rival plays a key office within the game, occasionally giving hints, helping out or even challenging the player to a rematch. Reason: Are attempt values awarded in mandatory captures? Do rematches also apply for wild Mythical Pokémon? Stakataka/Blacephalon in USUM: do they reappear if defeated?

In all games, existence defeated by a Legendary Pokémon does non cause it to disappear. In all games in which roaming Pokémon exist, fleeing from them does not cause them to permanently disappear; the game simply behaves the aforementioned as if they were the ones to flee.

Prior to Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, fleeing from stationary Legendary Pokémon causes the Pokémon to permanently disappear.

In Pokémon FireRed, LeafGreen, and Emerald, if the player flees from a stationary Legendary Pokémon, it volition reappear upon leaving and re-entering the room. The game informs the player that "The <Pokémon> flew away!". If the thespian defeats an event exclusive Legendary/Mythical Pokémon, it reappears later the player next enters the Hall of Fame.

In Pokémon Platinum, if the player defeats or flees from a stationary Legendary Pokémon, it reappears subsequently the histrion side by side enters the Hall of Fame. If the player defeats a roaming Pokémon, it will reappear only later the player has re-triggered the event which caused it to showtime roaming; for example, the histrion must talk to Professor Oak to cause a Legendary bird to resume roaming. If the player flees from or defeats Origin Forme Giratina in the Distortion World, it will reappear in Turnback Cave in its Contradistinct Forme, where it behaves in the same way equally all other stationary Legendary Pokémon.

This was extended to all stationary Pokémon (cherry-red Gyarados, Sudowoodo, and Snorlax) in HeartGold and SoulSilver. If Suicune is defeated or fled from, Eusine will comment on this fact, and it volition instead reappear at the Burned Tower, where information technology behaves in the same mode as all other stationary Legendary Pokémon. If Ho-Oh HG or Lugia SS is defeated or fled from during the storyline, the Kimono Girls will comment on this fact before leaving; however, the Pokémon nonetheless behave like any other stationary Pokémon.

In Pokémon Black and White, Reshiram B or Zekrom W must be caught; defeating, fleeing from or losing to the Pokémon does non cause information technology to disappear, the battle yields no experience, and the story cannot be progressed until it is caught. Still, if the thespian has a full party and PC, it is possible to progress without communicable information technology, in which case it instead appears at Dragonspiral Belfry after defeating Ghetsis, where it behaves in the same mode as all other stationary Legendary Pokémon, except that it will still non give whatsoever feel points.

In Pokémon 10 and Y, Xerneas X or Yveltal Y must be caught; defeating, fleeing from or losing to it does not cause it to disappear, the boxing yields no experience, and the story cannot exist progressed until it is caught. The 31st box in the Pokémon Storage System does not become available until afterwards the actor catches it, so it is not possible to avoid the capture even if the player's party and PC are both full.

In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, if the player defeats Groudon OR or Kyogre Every bit instead of catching them in the main story, they will reappear in the Cave of Origin afterwards entering the Hall of Fame. During the Delta Episode, Rayquaza must exist caught; defeating, fleeing from or losing to it does not cause information technology to disappear, the battle yields no experience, and the story cannot be progressed until information technology is defenseless. The 31st box in the Pokémon Storage System does not become available until after the player catches Rayquaza, so information technology is not possible to avert the capture even if the player's party and PC are both full. If the histrion flees from or defeats Deoxys in during the Delta Episode, it will reappear at the Dragonhark altar atop the Heaven Pillar afterward entering the Hall of Fame again, where it behaves in the same way as all other stationary Legendary Pokémon.

In Pokémon Sun and Moon, Solgaleo S or Lunala Grand must be caught; defeating, fleeing from or losing to it does not cause information technology to disappear, the battle yields no experience, and the story cannot be progressed until it is defenseless. The 31st box in the Pokémon Storage System does non become available until after the player catches the Legendary Pokémon. If the player defeats, flees from, or loses to Tapu Koko instead of communicable information technology during the postal service-credits result, Lillie will annotate on this fact, and Tapu Koko will immediately exist available to battle again at the Ruins of Conflict. If the player defeats, flees from or loses to a roaming Ultra Beast or Necrozma, information technology volition continue to reappear in the area until it is caught (the game reassures the player that information technology is even so in the area).

In Pokémon Ultra Lord's day and Ultra Moon, Solgaleo US or Lunala UM must exist caught for it to disappear; defeating, fleeing from or losing to it does non cause it to disappear and the battle yields no experience. The 31st box in the Pokémon Storage Arrangement does non become available until after the role player catches the Legendary Pokémon.

Pokémon Trading Bill of fare Game series

In Pokémon Trading Carte du jour Game and Pokémon Card GB2: Here Comes Squad GR!, all duelists are available for rematches. All the same, in some cases, a duelist switches their deck permanently at some point. For example, the rival character Ronald uses iv decks in the first game: the get-go iii decks are used in a single duel each, and then the fourth deck is used whenever the player challenges him for the Champion title at the Pokémon Dome. Similarly, in the 2d game, some Social club Masters apply a certain deck on their first duel, and then employ a unlike deck in all subsequent duels.
